Space is a constraint that is beginning to hit us these days. In this post we feature some intelligent space saving furniture that would be ideal for small space living.
Sure we’ve all seen convertible sofas that transform into a double bed and even easy chairs that convert to single beds but have you ever seen a couch that can become bunk beds? Now you have with the space saving Doc couch from Resource Furniture. The cover is fully removable for easy cleaning and there is an integrated ladder.
French designer Stephanie Perruchon has created some new concept furniture that can work in many settings where space saving is crucial to overall design.
This handsome piece of furniture looks like a wall cabinet but is actually a space-saving Murphy bed for your pet. Unlike regular pet beds, this one stays out of sight until bedtime!
This simple “all in one” office system can be molded very easily to fit your needs as the beech veneer shelves are completely and independently adjustable. A great space saving design goes a long way with wall-mounting shelves and if you combine a shelving unit with a desk, it really could not get better.
At a first glance this piece of furniture appears to be a bookshelf, but the Nettlestone Library Ensemble is actually a library table with two tone-on-tone cushioned barrel chairs on casters and hidden compartments.
For those of you who want to make a small bath look larger, here is an interesting idea presented by BHG. In this small bathroom, a sink is concealed in a drawer that pulls out only when necessary. The fixtures are on the wall above the drawer while a flexible hose drains the water away.
It’s a fact that smaller living areas like apartment and flats usually have hardly any furniture choices on hand, hence why a large bed in the bedroom, might be a problem. But worry no more, as we just laid our eyes on a Murphy Beds collection that will solve all your space crunch problems.
Puur Design Studio’s Magic chair is an interesting update on the idea of stackable furniture; the four-chairs-in-one design has more in common with Russian nesting dolls than your average cafeteria stacking seats.
For those more into geek culture than comfort, these Tetris-inspired combination furniture could be perfect. By fitting the pieces together in different ways, you can make a table and two chairs, a sofa, or a bed.

The K Workstation from MisoSoupDesigns shares the common theme of their product line with the signature bent wood construction and a clean, modern, and very light design.
Designer Dror Benshetrit designed this cantilevered chair that you just lift up and it goes flat, hangs on the wall with a simplicity and elegance that the Shakers would have admired. It is made by BBB Emmebonacina in Italy, so it won’t be cheap, but it truly is “an inspiring take on the maximization of space and the transformation of an object from 2D to 3D.”
Sapien Book Towers The Sapien Book Towers from Design Within Reach are a sturdy, space-saving alternative to traditional bookshelves that often fit in places other furniture won’t. The Short is $200 and the Tall is $300. This design has created a slew of spin-offs, but we think the Sapien is by far the sturdiest.
