The new entrance foyer for the TMW Technical Museum

Getting inspired by the tall and handsome greenery of nature which are the lush trees, a Germany-based Querkraft Architects company has designed the new entrance foyer for the TMW Technical Museum in Vienna, Austria, featuring multifunctional pieces of furniture resembling trees. The construction took place during summer 2010. Previously the museum had insufficient place, an unattractive seating and a lack of identity. In order to overcome these problems the Querkraft Architects managed to convince the 6-person jury with their design and gave the outstanding results. The modern renovation transformed the boring and old look by welcoming the visitors by tree like white structures that mark the lobby with a stylized entrance and provide a canopy and seating. These trees envelope the steel columns and provide a panoramic view through the glass ceiling and on to the historical facade. These white formal trees provide seating, shade and acoustic absorption and at night they illuminate the architecture by blue and white glowing lights.

Under the guidance of this designer all the older museum buildings are challenged to expand and modernize while remaining attached to their existing historical structures and values. The new extension provides with a new museum shop and café as well as sufficient space and ticketing capacity. The shops also under went renovation by exchanging flexible furnishings for the presentation of products. Multifunctional pieces of furniture made of glass-fibre are displayed inside.
